LibreOffice 26.8 Significantly Enhances Writer and Layout
With LibreOffice 26.8, Writer receives a major update for documents containing justified text: the Paragraph Composer.
Typically, a word processor calculates the layout of words line by line. While this method works well, it can create irregular spaces. Some lines may appear very tight, while others have large gaps.
The Paragraph Composer adopts a different approach. It analyzes several consecutive lines to better distribute the spaces throughout the paragraph. The result can therefore appear more consistent and closer to professional typesetting.
This update will particularly interest those who produce:
- reports;
- books and long documents;
- brochures;
- educational materials;
- documents intended for print.

Writer now automatically detects the direction of a paragraph when opening or pasting text. This improvement facilitates the use of languages written from right to left.

- for bidirectional texts;
- for languages using complex writing systems;

Version 26.8 marks a new milestone with certain charts saved in the OOXML format.
Microsoft Office uses several recent types of charts, including:
- box plots;
- funnel;
- Pareto;
- sunburst;
- treemap;
- waterfall.

Imagine a colleague creates a chart in Microsoft Excel that is still incompatible with Calc. You then open their XLSX file in LibreOffice to modify a few cells.
Previously, unsupported information was more likely to be lost when saving.

For example, you can calculate a rate, margin, or indicator without directly modifying the source data.
Calc also adds a command to randomly shuffle the order of cells in a range.
Data validation can now silently reject an incorrect value. This behavior existed before LibreOffice 24.2 and returns with this version.
Finally, cell styles can use relative font sizes. The border button also remembers the last used style.
LibreOffice 26.8 does not turn Calc into a new spreadsheet software. However, it enhances several functions used in complex professional files.

LibreOffice 26.8 contains no generative artificial intelligence functions.

Of course, LibreOffice can still work with extensions, external services, or complementary tools. However, the suite itself does not depend on a remote AI.
This orientation could become an independent selection criterion for organizations sensitive to privacy.
LibreOffice Remains Free, Without Subscription or Mandatory Account
LibreOffice 26.8 remains open-source software distributed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0.

However, a new feature may surprise some users.
LibreOffice 26.8 may periodically display a banner inviting donations. It appears in the start center, for example after an update or at certain intervals.

You can therefore continue to download and use LibreOffice for free.
Should You Install LibreOffice 26.8 or Stick with LibreOffice 26.2?
The release of LibreOffice 26.8 does not mean that all users should immediately switch from LibreOffice 26.2.
The Document Foundation clearly distinguishes between the two uses.

If you use LibreOffice on your personal computer and wish to enjoy the new features, LibreOffice 26.8 is the logical choice.
On the other hand, a business that uses dozens of machines may want to gather more feedback. It may also test the new version on a few machines before rolling it out broadly.
Some Changes to Know Before Updating
A major update sometimes brings changes that go unnoticed.
LibreOffice 26.8 no longer provides the old Gentium Basic and Gentium Book Basic fonts. If a document uses them, LibreOffice will choose another font if they are not installed on your computer. (TDF Community Blog)
However, you can install these fonts separately if you need them.
The mode formerly named "Safe Mode" also becomes "Troubleshoot Mode" in the English interface.
LibreOffice also modifies certain behaviors related to paragraph alignment. This change accompanies the improvements made for right-to-left written languages.

LibreOffice 26.8 Arrives After Several Months of Testing
This version does not appear without preparation.

LibreOffice 26.8 does not seek solely to compete with other suites by continuously adding more functions.
This version improves topics that are sometimes less spectacular but essential: typography, languages, accessibility, open formats, and document preservation.
It also enhances exchanges with Microsoft Office without abandoning the OpenDocument format as its native format.
Finally, it takes a clear stance regarding generative artificial intelligence and remote processing.
For many individuals, LibreOffice 26.8 therefore represents an interesting update. Writer benefits from significant enhancements, while Calc and Impress gain several useful functions.
Professionals should, however, assess their constraints before a widespread rollout. The 26.2 branch remains a temporarily relevant option when an installation prioritizes stability.
