Introduction to LibreOffice 4.3

LibreOffice 4.3 is the 8th major version of the free office suite announced by The Document Foundation since the project's inception in September 2010. This application is the result of the combined efforts of thousands of volunteers and hundreds of developers. It has reached a level of maturity that makes it suitable for every type of deployment.

This version focuses on practical improvements for everyday office work. It includes better document interoperability, more complete comment management, more intuitive spreadsheet usage in Calc, and support for animated 3D models in Impress on supported systems.

LibreOffice 4.2, the free and open-source office suite, is now available with enhanced performance, interoperability, and improved integration with Microsoft Windows.

LibreOffice 4.2: main new features

Calc has been completely revamped to deliver better results with large amounts of data, particularly when calculating cell values and importing large complex tables.

This improvement is useful for users who work with spreadsheets containing many rows, formulas or imported tables. Calc is designed to handle these operations more efficiently in LibreOffice 4.2, especially when working with large amounts of data.

Interoperability with Microsoft OOXML, especially for DOCX, as well as RTF inheritance, has also been significantly improved. Additionally, new import filters for AbiWord documents and Apple Keynote presentations have been added. Furthermore, thanks to better integration with Windows 7 and 8, thumbnails of open documents are now grouped by application, and the list of recent documents is displayed in the taskbar.

These improvements help users open, edit and exchange documents in several common formats. The improved support for Microsoft OOXML, DOCX and RTF is especially relevant for users who need to collaborate with people using different office software.

LibreOffice 4.2 introduces a new startup screen, featuring a clean layout that allows for better use of available space - even on smaller screens - and displays a preview of the most recently used documents.

On the mobile front, LibreOffice now supports a remote control Impress for iOS – this functionality was already available for controlling Impress remotely with an Android device. This allows users to manage their visual presentations on a laptop using the screen of an iPhone or iPad. The application is currently under review by Apple and will be announced as soon as it becomes available on the iTunes Store.

With Impress remote control, presentations can be managed from a mobile device while the slideshow runs on a laptop. In LibreOffice 4.2, this feature is mentioned for iOS, while remote control with an Android device was already available.

LibreOffice 4.1.3 is now available for download. The Document Foundation (TDF) announces the release of LibreOffice 4.1.3 for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. This is the third minor version of the LibreOffice 4.1 family, featuring a large number of improved interoperability functions with proprietary file formats.

This new version marks another step in the ongoing process of enhancing the overall quality and stability of LibreOffice 4.1.

The Free Office Suite the Community Has Always Dreamed Of for Twelve Years

The Document Foundation has announced version 4.0 of LibreOffice, the free office suite. LibreOffice 4.0 is the first version that reflects the goals set by the community at the time of the announcement in September 2010: a cleaner and lighter code base, an enhanced set of features, and improved interoperability.

This version brings together improvements for everyday office work, document compatibility, performance, and the user interface. It also keeps LibreOffice focused on free software and community-driven development.

LibreOffice 4.0: New Features

LibreOffice 4.0 offers a host of new features:

• Integration with content from multiple document management systems - including Alfresco, IBM FileNet P8, Microsoft SharePoint 2010, Nuxeo, OpenText, SAP NetWeaver, and other Cloud Services - through the CMIS standard.
• Improved interoperability with DOCX and RTF, thanks to several new features and enhancements such as the ability to import handwritten annotations and fix text range comments.
• Ability to import Microsoft Publisher documents, and improved Visio import filters with the addition of version 2013.
• Additional user interface enhancements, including integration and support for themes to give a personalized look to LibreOffice.
• Introduction of widget layout techniques via dialog windows, making it easier to translate, resize, and hide user interface elements, reducing code complexity, and laying the groundwork for a greatly improved user interface.
• Different header and footer on the first page of a Writer document, without the need for a separate page style.
• Several performance improvements for Calc, as well as new features such as exporting charts as images (JPG and PNG) and new spreadsheet functions as defined in ODF OpenFormula.
• The first version of the Impress Remote app for Android, supported only on certain Linux distributions. (Coming soon to all platforms: Windows, MacOS X, and all Linux distributions.)
• Significant performance improvements when loading and saving many types of documents, notably improvements for ODS, XLSX, and RTF files.
• Improved through code contributions: Gerrit, an internet-based code review system, makes it easier for projects using the Git version control system.

These changes cover several practical uses. Writer gains simpler first-page header and footer management. Calc receives performance improvements, chart export to JPG and PNG, and new spreadsheet functions based on ODF OpenFormula. Impress is linked to the first Android Impress Remote app, with the platform support described above. The import improvements for Microsoft Publisher, Visio, DOCX, and RTF help users work with documents created in other office environments.
